A friend has this Honda four-stroke but the numbers are missing off it and he can’t identify it. The paint seems original so we think it must be an early one. Any ideas?

Maybe you can find a serial number on the block?

I would say a model B75 circa 1973; maybe the chart will help.

By looking at the decal in the picture. Then the American Honda Parts book it is a B75K1. 1973 and 1974 production years. They did have early problems but kept on upgrading the motors with the k2 and K3 version. Complete new model in 1978 with the BF75. That became the BF8 and stayed in production until 2006 model year.

They are actually very nice and reliable kit.

I remember when they first came on the scene down-under………even Honda marine dealers had problems with these let alone just a service and repair "Boat Shop"…………they were totally different to anything an outboard tech was trained in/on or for . "MECHANICS NIGHTMARE" was the reputation that sadly prevailed.

As different type Honda product dealers never talked to each other it took a while for Outboard techs to get an understanding of the basic concept of "A Japanese water-cooled, OHC, inline twin, engine plonked on a leg".

When shown to a Honda motorcycle mechanic it was a case of "Same Stuff, Different Colour and has no chain". "What is that sharp rotating thing down there".

I have always wanted one with the Blue Decals……..an unmolested one will turn up one day as there were absolutely shed loads sent down here.

Have a lot of fun with it.

              Cheers

PS: Just noticed that it has a "Prop Guard".

If this was used as a surf or beach rescue boat motor it should be checked for salt water ingress in all of the usual places including electrics. Motors used as such usually got themselves "Dumped" a few times aye.
