Hey  – I know it’s not a really old motor, but I recently bought a used Smokercraft fishing boat with a boat-factory installed 1996 28 HP Evinrude, model 28ESLEDR on it.  It has the electric primer pump for starting.  I never messed with one of these before.  I want to know what the red knob on the primer mechanism does.  It is sitting half way between pointing upwards and down.  I feel a detent when it’s all the way down.  What does the red knob do? and where should it be pointing for normal operation from pushing in on the ignition key?

      Thx,

      Dave

The red knob is the manual activation for the electric primer.  It should normally be in the closed position with the red knob pointing back towards the black primer body, there should be a detent when it is in the off position.  If not, someone might have had it apart and broken the cap during reassembly.

Thanks!    That makes sense where the detent is.  I think someone just bumped the knob, or didn’t understand it, as it was half way in between.
