I would like to install electric starting on this as I am pretty sure my mate will not be able to pull start it. There is already a ring gear on the flywheel but neither shop.evinrude nor marineengine.com shows an electric starting version. I don’t need help especially with the electrical side–that’s simple enough.
In searching online I find considerable discussion and disagreement on what brackets work to mount a starting motor on these.
I have some sheets for an electric starting kit for a 1968 18 hp. The bracket is called out as 308482 and the starter motor as 376850. Is this what I want?
Any guidance much appreciated.
September 11, 2016 at 9:19 pm #43831This was a frankenmotor purchased for $60. Three different colors …. and no hood. I wasn’t really expecting it to run as is but it does. This motor is at the upper limit of what I can hump around, and at the upper limit of comfortable manual starting.
And if anybody has a hood….I probably don’t really care whether it’s Johnson or Evinrude, neither have inspiring styling.

September 11, 2016 at 10:53 pm #43842To the best of my knowledge, they do. With reservations.
EDIT: Well, I dunno I think the bracket was modified to hold the solenoid when the junction box was eliminated (??)
September 11, 2016 at 10:58 pm #43843So do all the 22 cu in motors use the same bracket and starter? I took one from a 57 18 hp and used it in a 72 25 HP Without any problems, that being said my guess is it should work…. I do know the starters from 1957 all the way through 1978 are the same, you can buy the new starter at discount starter and alternator for about 70 bucks 😎
September 11, 2016 at 11:52 pm #43849These kits, for all they cost, apparently don’t have a choke solenoid. So they are to electrify tiller motors, not for remote control…. I think I know what to look for now. Probably about any 22 cu in starter and bracket can be made to work.
September 12, 2016 at 12:41 am #43854The early 15hp motors looked similar but the brackets were different because they were for 6V starters. Just sayin, be careful they may not be what you think.
