Is it possible to put a electric starter on a 18hp FD-16 Johnson. I have had this outboard forever but not had it running in 20 years. The outboard ran fine but it sure wore you out starting it , maybe some were electric starts ?
      Thanks

Electric start was a factory option some years (in the 1950s?), and an option later on.

I’m sure my 1961 Evinrude 18 is less than perfectly tuned, and it never takes more than 6 pulls (three with choke, three without), which is 6 more than my sweetheart can do, so I’m working on wiring up a 1959 which came to me with electric start.

Electric start kit is still available. Includes starter (PN 376850) and bracket (PN 308482/317328) only. Part number is 0175019 OMC Evinrude/Johnson. You’ll have to buy the solenoid/bracket and push button starter switch separately.

A starter and bracket from an 18, 20 or 25 horse motor thru the late seventies is a straight bolt on to your motor. Later ones had the solenoid mounted in the starter bracket while others had it mounted on the starboard side bracket.

              From the ’63 Johnson catalogue:
