I picked up a very unique motor the 16 hp Elgin It is very intriguing how they engineered the pull start system with pulleys and rope . same thing for mag. advance and carb. It is set up for remote with cables to back of engine on each side . Im trying to determine where I might find parts and what was the original color combination. 19954 fiberglass hood

Take a look here http://elginoutboard.com/sears-catalog-pages/1954-2/ I just picked up a 1956 12 hp myself. They are cool motors. Can you post some pics?

Here’s one I came across at a swap meet in Southern California last year.

Ugly as a toad, but toads have charm too, in their own way.

                  Frank,
I thought it was so ugly it was good looking too! Looks to be related to a OMC group. Yes the hood is glass too. Looks industrial built. Wish I could find a early Firestone 16hp to join my group of them. Good luck with the motor. Look under the brand name for data,
                  Jeff

I’m working on one of these "toads" right now – and at 93lbs, it’s a really big and heavy toad too! 😛

I had a devil of a time with the waterpump, well not the pump itself, but getting the drive shaft out so I could get to the pump. I started on a page about it for my website to help any other poor soul who is working on one: http://www.oddjobmotors.com/elgin-16.htm

Now I’m in the midst of trying to find a lower crank seal. Despite being able to read the Garlock Klozure # of 378, that part doesn’t seem to be available or cross. At 1 7/64" shaft, 1 5/8" OD and 3/8" Ht it’s an odd size – McMaster Carr and even Chicago Rawhide didn’t have them. I ordered the closest SKF and also a slightly different Timkin to see if one of them may work, may need to get creative with the OD. I’ll add this odyssey to the webpage on it as soon as I have a solution.

On the plus side, I got to run Bob G’s at our Shelton CT meet last fall and it did run well. Moved the boat along nicely, wasn’t too loud and was smooth. I’m hoping to get this beast running so Bob, Walt L and any other members with one can participate in a run with them at Lake Wallenpaupack next month.

Nice write-up Lotec. I have some smaller Elgins to work on some day,
but now wish I had one of those 16 hp work horses!

                      Prepare to be boarded!

This thing is just my kind of motor. Different with a capital "D". Looks like they took some West Bend parts, Johnson SD and RD parts, and had a go!

                        I like it.
