Looking for the impellers that fit the 1951 & 53 Elgin 5 & 7.5 hp motors.
They are the rubber, 10 vane impellers, that are about 1-3/16″ tall,
and 1 inch plus OD. They have a brass, splined hub.I have an old pdf file from an apparent “no longer existent” web page
of Jim Melgin Outboards. (in part below)
In the file, it mentions that Flying Scott (Bob Long) made the replacement
impellers needed. I know from memory and searches herein, that
Bob is in “outboard heaven”.
Did anyone take over his impeller production, and if so, have contact information?
I’ve emailed Brian Wilcox, but have not heard back yet.
Thanks!Prepare to be boarded!
November 11, 2022 at 1:46 pm #268926I’m not 100% sure your elgin is the same as the one I’m talking about here.
I had a nice 5HP Twin Cylinder Elgin come my way a while back. It needed a new impeller; the old one (10 vane) had lost each and every one of it’s vanes.
When I contacted Brian Wilcox he told me that he no longer makes the 10 vane Elgin impellers 25065-*; but he suggested an interesting fix!
“Take two of the Mercury 47-33980 impellers intended for use with Mercury 4.5-9.8 engines of the 60’s era. Stack ’em and run ’em!”
So….I did just that. The driveshaft needs to be drilled; fabricate a small pin that goes in the shaft and can catch in the slot in the brass core of the impeller. You will need to slightly (VERY SLIGHTLY) enlarge the inner diameter of the core; I did this by wrapping emory paper around the shank of a drill bit. Took just seconds per impeller.
I sourced my impellers from China for a whopping $3.68 each shipped. They arrived within 10 days (Shipped from a location n Southern California actually…)
This is an easy repair and it worked very nicely. Another Elgin runs again!

SeaKaye, I just heard back from Brian today. He cited
impeller # 47-89881 and you cite 47-33980.
I find neither number on the Net.I did have one Merc impeller 47-89981 that I experimented
with, that seemed like a candidate in OD and height.
It was a little sloppy on the bore though.I found a post on a FB Elgin site, where a fellow in TX
stacked two unknown impellers (he can’t remember what part number),
but instead of drilling the driveshaft for pins, he ran a pin vertical in
the driveshaft splines, and the groove in the impeller hubs slid over
the pin.
He had a video of him spinning the driveshaft in the lower unit over via
drill, and pumping water a few inched up in the air, but he said when he
put the motor back together it wouldn’t pump. He gave up on the motor.
But anyway, I liked the way he used the vertical pin.I’m awaiting an email back from Brian regarding the Merc part number.
Thanks!UPDATE – Just heard back from Brian, 47-89981 is the correct part number,
and he suggest NOT to use a vertical pin as it would slide around and chew
up the brass housing.UPDATE UPDATE: In doing further research, it appears
Sierra impeller 18-3054 would be a better fit on the driveshaft (which is .442 OD)
and is very close in OD and height dimensions of the 47-89981 (18-3039) Brian recommended.
With the 18-3054 impeller, only about .003 from the hub center would have to
be bored out, as Seakaye suggested. The 47-89981 / 18-3039 has a hub ID of .456 and is sloppy on the .442 driveshaft,
but probably would work.I’m going to order both impellers and see which works out best.

November 13, 2022 at 10:59 am #268987November 13, 2022 at 12:50 pm #268991There is a 47-89980, which is the same impeller size as the ’81 but has a slightly smaller ID for the shaft. Maybe that’s the same as the Sierra 18-3054?
Long live American manufacturing!

Bill, that’s correct regarding the 18-3054 being the same as the Merc 47-89980.
The 47-89981 may be a hair thicker if I remember from the specs.
I’ve ordered two of each shaft size to see what pleases me the best.

I suggest you go to the special interest group
section and contact Jim Moffatt, the Elgin the
group leader, and see what he has to offer.
Tubs.November 14, 2022 at 9:59 pm #269039Tubs, not sure if I’ve tried contacting Jim via the special interest form or not,
but I was on there and looked at his info.
I have an older PDF file of Jim’s Elgin page, and at the time he mentioned
contacting “The Flying Scott” for impellers, but I guess he passed a while back.
Anyway, Brian Wilcox confirmed the stacked up Mercury impellers do work,
and offered me tips. I’ll see what he has to say when the new impellers arrive.Prepare to be boarded!
