      What is this pin for on my lower unit? Could it be an indicater for the grease level?

        Nope.

        It locks the adjustable front prop shaft
        bushing after setting the end play.
        You can see the other end sticking down
        looking at the front of the gear case.

        A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

          Thanks Tubs. OK, I see it in the parts list. I gave it 24 pumps with the grease gun and stopped. Did’nt want to blow a seal. Should be enough?

            Wheele bearing grease is not what "Grease" means when referring
            to these early outboards.
            If your talking about using Corn Head grease that’s a good choice.

            A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
