Sometimes I like to re-assemble the lower units with
the power head upside down. It’s a pain getting
them mounted on my bench vise board, trying
to hold the motor in place while tightening the
      transom pads.
I remember seeing a photo a year or two ago
of someone using a automotive engine stand
      that rotates 360 degrees.
I have one in the shed doing "nothing".
It would be simple enough to bolt a board on
      two of the stand’s arms.
I would like to have it so when inverted, the
      lower unit is straight vertical.
Just wondering if any of you have used an engine
stand, it’s practicality, and ideas of mounting
a board in some fashion so the lower unit is
      true vertical.
      Thanks for your ideas.

I use an auto motor stand like you described. Works great. Fab whatever jigs you need to do the job.

Well I dug the engine stand out of the shed and went
to work. Used a 2 x 10 and what bolts I could find,
using big nuts for spaces to simulate a 12 degree
transom mount so the lower unit would be straight
          vertical, whether upright or inverted.

I put it to a test right away and found it worked
great to drain the gas out of the old Rude.
No more struggling holding an outboard upside
down trying to hit the funnel, and feeling gas
run down your pants leg 😮

I didn’t try reversing the engine before I
rotated it upside down, but beware that
          without the reverse lock engaged
the motor could tip back, scratching
          the front of the motor.

I actually have a repair stand that came from a sear repair center. As for the tipping of the motors, make put a couple of eye bolts low on the transom board and then use a piece of rope to tie it in place.

Syd, I was thinking about rigging a bungie cord or something.
I think your idea of lag bolts would work good.
