I bought this 1956 10 hp Evinrude last week. The guy told me the coils were taken out as they were no good. When I pulled the fly wheel off the first thing I seen was the side missing off of the screw post. Is this repairable. I do have another plate to replace this one. Do not really want to get rid of the broken one . Thanks Russ….

Might be a good spare if you can JB Weld the broken area and retap the threads.

if the screws are long enough it might be fine.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work if the screw isn’t over tightened. I think I’d me more concerned about the missing clips which hold the points on.

If you don’t have the retaining clips for the points, you can get those at any hardware store.

An approach might be as follows: 1a Clean casting threads with acetone (fingernail polish remover) or lacquer thinner, 1 Take the appropriate screw and coat thread of screw with silicone spray, 2 Lightly remove excess silicone from screw threads, 3 Install silicone-coated screw making sure no excess silicone scraps onto the threads of the broken casting, 4 Make boss of JB weld around the threaded screw and the threads of the casting, 5 What of cure of JB weld.

Personally, I wouldn’t bother. There are plenty of good ones out there. Possibly even free.

contruction glue, silicone, or epoxy would hold the coil in place to. just wash the base clean, scratch it with 60 grit paper blow dry and glue in the coil. when it goes bad in 30 years you can bang it out

Looks like a good candidate for alumaweld. What ever you choose I would under cut the back sides, slightly bevel them towards the inside of the hole so the patch will hold better. If I am right OMC mag plates on the 5.5, 7.5, and 10 hp are interchangeable. I swapped a 1957 5.5 hp onto a 1959 10 hp. Check your numbers I think you can swap them from 1955 through 1960.

One more thing to consider before trying to “repair” this. A failed epoxy/JB weld repair will result in the screw coming out and getting caught in the flywheel, which will destroy every piece under there, maybe even the flywheel…
