Greetings! I have a good condition 1951-52 25hp Big Twin. It came with a 1954 Dunphy Dolphin Deluxe runabout that I have been restoring. The boat itself seems to be wired for remote electric start (push button ignition, shutoff switch, ignition lock and 6v dry cell battery) However, the motor does not appear to be equipped with an electric starter or any harness, but was set up for remote throtttle and shifting and steering. I’ve browsed around on the internet and there doesn’t seem to be any clear info on whether or not such a conversion is even possible, let alone practical. Has anyone had any experience in such an endeavor?
Best,

August 11, 2021 at 5:25 pm #244732’54 was the first year for the electrified 25 HP Big Twin. Yours might be backwards compatible. Therefore ’54 flywheel, starter and bracket may work on what you have. Others more knowledgeable than i Will hopefully correct my information. I can post pictures of the ’54 Big Twin Electric i have at home.

August 12, 2021 at 6:37 am #244742I’d like to see those pictures! Thanks
August 12, 2021 at 6:41 am #244743Are the hoods interchangeable? If not this project seems to be unworkable. Thanks.

August 15, 2021 at 10:04 pm #244949Shamus, Forgive my shaky memory but a year or two ago I had two 54 Evinrude 25 HP . One Evinrude was a parts motor and it had the electric start. The other running motor did not have electric start. I figured I could maybe use the bracket, flywheel, and hood from that motor and put electric start onto the running Evinrude. The bracket is supported mostly by one long bolt that screws into a boss cast onto the powerhead . There was no boss on the non electric motor to accept the bolt. I concluded that electric start motors were built that way at the factory and no backfit was possible for 1954 Big twins.
I hope another member chimes in to correct me but I expect that Johnson could be the same. Take a good look at the powerhead photos. The added boss has a qtip in the hole. .August 16, 2021 at 1:04 am #244961I don’t know who or where but someone, somewhere, once hooked up a chain driver starter to their motor.
The starter bracket fits the starter and the block good so I wonder if this was an aftermarket kit including a ratchet for the flywheel gear.
