Hi all, just putting the finishing touches on a 15014 Evinrude and am having a problem with the cam follow roller falling off the beginning of the throttle control cam. I have tried every combination possible between the the gears on the motor end, and the gears on the throttle arm to no avail.
The only information I could find on adjustment in the red Johnson service manual was to move the brass control cam forward to make the butterfly open at the correct point, which doesn’t help my problem.Unfortunately it was a parts motor when I started so I don’t know if the problem existed before I started with mismatched parts, although everything seems correct looking at my parts diagram. Help..anyone seen this before?
Thanks,
Bob DMay 8, 2020 at 4:10 pm #202537hum…. cam follower seems different than the parts place picture…. in any event it apparently goes to far left and the roller falls off. what about moving the throttle gear and post gears by one notch.
maybe that would limit the range of the current cam follower and keep the roller on. …..just a suggestion experts will chime in

Bob DMay 8, 2020 at 5:12 pm #202540I’m not quite sure what you mean by falls off the roller… It is normal for the ignition to be able to retard past the point of the cam being on the roller in most OMC engines of this type….So, I’m not sure you have a problem here. Now, if the roller goes back too far after coming off the cam causing it to jam against the edge of the cam when the throttle is re-advanced, that is a problem…

Fleetwin, I have enclosed a picture of the bottom of the armature plate. Yes the roller is dropping off and stopping the motor from readvancing. I will try your suggestion regarding adjusting the throttle control cam plate inward. Possibly that will give the roller some extra room and it will not hang? Looking at the picture it looks that during reassembly I brought it out to the furthest position.
I will report back.
Bob DMay 8, 2020 at 9:55 pm #202567Well I guess I made a rookie mistake by not setting up the brass throttle control cam first. Once I moved it inward it allowed the roller to get past without hanging up and everything was fine. The butterfly starts to open at the correct mark, and the butterfly was wide open at full throttle.
Thanks Don for calling it on this one. Hopefully this will help someone down the road, also thanks Richard for the compliment on the motor. It was pretty beat up when I got it.
