My favorite outboards are the 3 hp Evinrude and Johnsons from their introduction in 1952 through the late 60’s before they went to the fiberglass cowl.
Lots of reasons for my affection for these but mainly it boils down to my appreciation that they got the design right from jump street and they were built back when quality was really job one and America took pride in what we made.
Also, I had an early 60’s Johnson when I was a kid that still resides at the bottom of a lake in Connecticut because I lost it while spinning “water doughnuts” horsing around. I have a collection of these early motors but a really nice “white” ‘60’s Johnson has alluded me so far and I’d love to find one.
I do have several nice Evinrudes though from the era, and I recently picked up a nice original 1962 that was missing its lower cowls. In the process of trying to find a replacement pair I noticed that even though the cowls seem interchangeable for many years there are some differences that go beyond paint color and decals. There’s a cutout for a water flush screw on the early ones that’s missing from later ones for example.
But there’s a semicircular flange in the starboard cowl casting near the handle that shows up somewhere in the mid 60’s that has me baffled (see photos).
It’s on my ‘67 Ducktwin but also on a cowl from a ‘66 that I picked up. Another’62 Lightwin I have doesn’t heave it.
Does anyone know what this might be for? My guess is it might be for an external gas tank connection, but I’ve never seen one set up like that.
Any ideas?

One more thing I’ll have to keep an eye out for.
