I’ve got maybe 25 to 35 thousandths of an inch of play between the mag plate and the brass crankcase boss. This play has resulted in the stator coil touching the inside of the flywheel and showing wear. Not destructed, but definitely headed that way. It has been a good running motor for the past year but is almost inoperable now.I talked to Dan in TN and Dan mentioned that at one time there was a kit that would solve this wear and resulting ‘looseness’ that I’m getting.
I’m looking for this kit or a feasible solution.
We have a thread running on converting this low tension magneto system over to the duel magneto system that OMC is well known for. I’d like to keep the charging system if I could but converting is an interesting option.
The motor on an Alumacraft Merry 16
The mag plate as found on flywheel pulling.
Wear where the stator coil rubbed the flywheel.
The wear areas that result in play in the mag plate.
June 15, 2018 at 10:10 pm #78003580871 is the P/N for the repair kit to fit the older universal mag. Not sure about the newer ones.

June 15, 2018 at 10:20 pm #78004I was under the impression that the charging system only worked at higher rpm’s??? Or was that the older ones??? heck I don’t know

June 15, 2018 at 11:06 pm #78009Somebody in the club has to have Seavice Bulletin set from that time? The information is in the form of a SB. Should be around 1976/77. OMC was having enough trouble by then to offer the kit. I believe it was called a Stator Stabilization kit. It changed the way the mag plate bolted to the top of the block. No longer uses the top collar at all, just like the #580871 kit, but mounting holes for low tension stuff & charging stator. I don’t care for low tension ignition so I will not be hunting for one, but they got to be out there.
I can’t believe I have let my SB set get away from me. Don’t even remember where it went? I have older stuff, but not the stuff from that time.Dan in TN
June 15, 2018 at 11:19 pm #78011Doesn’t that brass sleeve rotate around the hardened steel bearing shell? If that is correct (?), the steel should not be worn and a new armature plate should restore it.
EDIT: Bare armature plate was part # 581217, NLA
June 15, 2018 at 11:23 pm #78013Frank the bearing shell looks to also be of brass.
