I’m having trouble converting from pressure tank to pump system. There is so little room to install I could only put small Briggs pump top of head at back motor . Plugged off one hole in pulse port but I think its to far to high to work runs out fuel. Any ideas what pump to use where to mount ??
May 22, 2016 at 10:26 pm #36987Most people use the Mikuni pump. I confess I’ve never converted a 5.5 but the Duckworks Magazine article sure has convinced a lot or people to try it.
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/05/col … /index.htmMay 23, 2016 at 1:28 am #36996The 5.5 is tough to convert, like the rest, because there are no removable bypass covers, like the bigger motors. The duckworks magazine conversion is the most practical method. If you have the powerhead apart, then I would install a nipple on the bypass port anyway and use it for the air actuator line for your Briggs and Scrapiron fuel pump. Mikunis are great too, and so many different styles. If you do go with a fuel pump, make sure you get the three connection type.
May 24, 2016 at 2:35 am #37047I used the Mikuni carbs with dirt bikes Great carbs! The pump is great too. Put carbs made for a 450 Honda bike on the bored 324 cc to 368cc kit. The Mikuni carbs worked very well after jetting it down three steps. Made an easy start 350 twin except it ran hot as little wind cooled it. It sure was fast though!

May 24, 2016 at 12:57 pm #37061Tom’s Old Evinrude, Johnson site has a very good detailed instruction on converting with mikuni pump. I did a ten hp and mounted pump on side for a friend. He has instructions and pictures for 5.5 also.
May 25, 2016 at 1:12 am #37121my converted 5.5 runs great on mikuni.. actually a B&S round pump mounted on a triangiular bracket. trolls all days no issues
I used the method on utube…. behind the carb plate …cimented one pulse channel and removed the check valves

May 25, 2016 at 9:11 pm #37166to make the triangular bracket I used some 90 angles.
one was cut about 1 inch at the base corner to bolt into the rear cross bar (where the rubber bumper are)
the other 2 parts of the triangle were just cut pieces of common 90 degree angles, cut to fit the mounting holes of the pump
I used nylon self locking nuts to keep the assembly from vibration loose.this snugs the pump body next to the cyl. wall and allows the cover to fit nicely
