I just picked up this cub in pretty nice condition other than the rope
which one side got broke off.I am pretty sure from the two wires that were hanging from it the previous owner had ran a buzz coil on it.
Is there a coil that will fit/work in this little motor that anybody knows of or one that can be modified to work?
Thanks,
PaulJune 28, 2020 at 3:56 pm #207003I can’t say for sure, but it looks like a good candidate for an OMC universal
coil conversion. Should be lots to “search” for on the forum regarding the topic.Prepare to be boarded!

June 28, 2020 at 10:07 pm #207013Thanks for the help. I am looking at that military coil now. It appears there is a version for one spark plug that seems to have been used by some. I am going to take a shot at it.
I am also looking at this as a possibility. I am emailed for some dimensions to see if it will work.
June 29, 2020 at 12:17 pm #207045I remember some
Members using a
Chainsaw coil?
Maybe one from
Stihl?June 29, 2020 at 12:32 pm #207046I seen that as well. I also did a little more digging and found that the Andover military coil is the same as the Mercury chainsaw Disston coil. When I was looking on Ebay I found they looked the same. When I zoomed in on the pictures of each type I found they had the same numbers stamped on the outside. The main difference was the cost. The military coil I have listed in the link is $25. The chainsaw coil is listed for $45.
The second link I had was just for the windings and looked like it could slide over the laminations for the Cub. I don’t know enough about coils to know if this would work or not but is sure seems like it might. If so that one looks small enough that it could possibly match in size to the Cub coil. I am hoping the seller emails me the dimensions. If it is right, then it would just be a matter of do I toss $25 at it just to satisfy my curiosity. Either way I am going to buy the military coil.
I am also going to peel back some of the windings on the cub coil to see what I find since I have nothing to lose at this point. I might even learn something.
June 29, 2020 at 2:33 pm #207052Another option for a coil is a Disston Mercury D0-100 DO-101 Chainsaw Coil. that what I used on my Cub.
As with Tubs coil, it involved a bit of cutting and grinding. Found mine on Ebay a while back.
Bob DJune 29, 2020 at 4:34 pm #207069Thanks Bob. The Disston Coil is the one I was referring to in my prevoius reply. It is the same as the military coil but costs almost twice as much. By the way, yours was one of the previous posts that got me down this road trying to figure out what would work, so thanks!

June 29, 2020 at 7:19 pm #207089Will do Tubs. By the way, you have great videos but the one you have the link to above says it is private every time I try to look at it. I went to youtube directly and went to your videos to try and see it that way but it did not show up in any of the videos you have out there. I did see the one you have showing the motor running after you were done with the coil but not the one on how you did what you did. Funny thing is I swear I had seen it before when I was looking at a way to get a working coil for my early Evinrude N.
