They did make a model that went through the bottom of the boat. (1915 ? ) Dad thought they were a joke. The vibration was hard on a lightweight canoe. Exhaust couplings tended to leak. A couple sailboats that were using them as auxiliaries sank and the model was quickly dropped from the lineup. A very rare collectors model today, most ended up in the bottom of the lake.

I had a GRAY model U marine inboard motor once.
Clamped it down to the work bench and started it up.
The workbench hopped all around the garage, lol
