Why do engines just keep following me home?
This is all I know;
Evinrude Fastwin
#1451282I believe it to be a 14 hp Model H from 1929-32
Can anyone fill me in on any other information. I can’t find much mention of it when I do a Google search nor anyrhing even remotely resembling a parts list, owners manual nor specifications. It would be really, really good if someone else out there who owns one similar gets in contact with me. Then I can pick your brain about it before I start touching it with wrenches and screwdrivers.
October 2, 2017 at 11:05 am #65659These are pretty much the same as the ’29 Fastwins. This one should have a steel hub in the flywheel, much better than the original ones used which had an aluminum hub. Rollers on the mains, friction on the wrist pin. Make sure the pistons are in good shape before you run it, these are notorious for having bad pistons. Replace the cotter pins that hold the wrist pins in place.
The prop on that motor is a replacement, I’m not sure if its vented, and it’s not the racing prop with the ears to help pull water out of the lower unit. The stock prop has holes in it which pull water through the motor for cooling. All of the water fittings must be airtight for the system to work. The compression fittings are NOT a stock size today, so if you see regular hardware store brass compression nuts on any of the aluminum fittings, beware.
You have the long tiller, presumably with the twist throttle. These are not easy to find, so good for you! Ditto on the air horn.

October 2, 2017 at 1:44 pm #65663A model "H" Fastwin was among my motor collection that my X wife sold to a scrap dealer for ten cents a pound. This is my Mom and Dad in the boat Dad had built by the St. Louis Meramec Canoe Company. The album I had of the pictures taken that day was stolen, but I found this ad that was made from one of those pictures in a Yachting magazine. . .
October 2, 2017 at 11:30 pm #65680Thanks for the responses. I’ve gained a little knowledge now. As for the tiller arm, it is about 21" long but does not have a twist theottle. The throttle control is on the port side of the carb,a paddle shaped lever to push up or down. There is also a connector below the paddle for a bowden type cable to rig up at the same location.
I have found a copy of ‘Instructions and List of Repair Parts’ reprinted by ???. Print date is Aug 24, 1928 for types H – HL. My lower unit looks different but the engine, carb and mag all look the same as the book.The engine has ‘steering eyes’ on either side below the spark plugs. To my mind these are not spread out far enough to gain the leverage you would need to steer with. Can either of you, or someone else, explain to me how they were rigged up to help with steering?

October 3, 2017 at 1:34 am #65687October 3, 2017 at 2:34 am #65691I don’t have a Parts Book or Service Manual, just basic information. With a bore of 2-3/8" and a stroke of 2-1/2", your Fastwin has a piston displacement of 22.15 cubic inches. Like the "U" model Speeditwin, all main bearings are anti-friction. Its 14 horse power is developed at 4,500 RPM. The 130173 shear pin is a 1/4" diameter 17 St aluminum rod 1-7/16" long. The Standard B28AE propeller is a hollow two bladed Aluminum casting that acts as a water pump. A solid hub prop may not circulate enough water at slow speeds. In cases where overheating is a problem, enterprising mechanics have added an intake scoop below the exhaust outlet behind the propeller. Randy has such a device on his Junior Quad. The Champion O Com has been replaced by W-10 has been replaced by 510 . . .
October 4, 2017 at 12:14 am #65717I echo Tom’s comments about the waterline fittings. They look like standard hardware store variety 3/8ths compression nuts, but for some goofy reason, Evinrude used ones about .050 undersize. I machined all new ones for my ’29.
You MUST find the correct prop with water holes in it in order to achieve proper cooling if you plan on running it anything other than wide open where water is forced through the inlet holes. Carburetors are fragile and hard to come by so be careful when disassembling and assembling. Do NOT over tighten the high speed needle housing or the low speed nut. It will easily strip the female threads in the carb body—-and that applies to all carb fittings.
Piston skirts often have chips in them and they need to be filed smooth. The wrist pins are held in with cotter pins and for some reason the cotter pins might be undersized. I think that happens because the holes in the piston boss and the wrist pin holes do not always align perfectly. What I did was to align the wrist pin holes perfectly with the outer boss’s hole and then ran an aircraft (long) drill through to open the inner boss’s hole in alignment. Then I used, and I think it is a 5/32nd drill I used, a 5/32nds cotter pin for a really tight fit. Undersized cotter pins allow the wrist pin to rock and slowly eat up the cotter pin.
I’ve had 3 pre-1930 Evinrudes with the pistons in upside down. Check that also. Oh, and one last thing…..the steering handle adapter mounted to the bottom of the crankcase,—-make sure those 2 bolts are tight! They have a tendency to loosen up and eventually wallow out the holes and threads.

October 4, 2017 at 3:39 pm #65738Lots of great info from all you guys. I’ve printed it all out as my memory is definitely not what it used to be and I won’t be doing any work on the engine until the wx turns and I have to start working indoors.
I’m a little confused about the comments about stock prop vs the prop I have. Could anyone send me a picture of what you all mean by a prop with holes for cooling. Best if you could send it to my home email address. I think it is listed on my id page.
I’m sure come January I’ll be back asking more questions but for no THANKS!!!!
