I picked this up at a tag sale today and thought it looked suspiciously like an Evinrude Row Boat Motor tiller handle. (My RBM has the later twist shift tiller that’s affixed.) It had no business at this tag sale, but for a dollar I figured how could I go wrong, it’s a nice piece of brass regardless!

I figured someone here could easily confirm – the brass part is 11" long and about 1" wide. (See photos below)

The 1914 Catalog for Evinrude shows this tiller with a rubber handle. The dimensions you provided match the tiller arm for my 1913 RBM. There should be a part number cast on the opposite side. Possibly 40 or 44. I would venture to guess that it is from an Evinrude RBM. Pre 1915. Hope this helps.

Thanks Skeg2 – that’s just want I needed! Now I’ll need to find a motor to go with it!! 😉

That’s the best deal I’ve seen for a long time!

Now I better get going to our local flea market to try and find the rest of that motor! 😀

It was a good estate/tag sale with a lot of home tools and some car stuff – prices ranged from amazing to insane! The P.O. seemed to have been into muscle cars of the Mopar variety, the tiller was in with a box of romex, outlet boxes and home wiring stuff. I saw nothing else in the marine vein save a couple of those ceramic sailing ship whisky decanters that were popular in the 1960s. (alas empty…)

Just goes to show, you have to keep your eyes open ’cause you never know!

If that handle could only talk… where had it been and what hands had been on the tiller.

                  Hey Art

Now you’ve got me thinking. I’ve got a rope sheave and decal for an RBM I’ll donate to your build. If everybody else kicks in a piece or two from their local flea market you’ll have that RBM in no time flat 🙂

Kevin, that would be hilarious! And it would make a great write-up for the OUTBOARDER – member builds RBM from donated spares and flea-market/yard sale finds!! 😆

I will keep my eyes open for any possible yard sale contributions.

You know, I think I remember the farmers and ranchers around here using them there things for pounding in the staples to hold their barbed wire on the fence posts with and also drive them square nails into their horses hooves to hold the shoes on. Being made of brass, or bronze, they never rusted while left in the barn or hanging on a post and the rubber grip provided some more oomph. Last I heard, all of the matching motors in the barn got stolen by some kids up the street and they tried to make go-karts out of them.
