I picked up this motor with electric start which I finally got squared away. Now I am on to the lower unit which was the reason this motor ended up in someones barn sitting in the first place. After looking at what I have, doing some research through the forum and looking at a parts manual I have most of my bearing situation sorted out. There are a couple other areas in this lower unit that I still need to figure out or get some replacement parts. I have attached pictures of what I have. What appears to have happened in my opinion is the brass or bronze bushing wore out and busted up which then took out the bearing. It is the bronze bushing that I am having a hard time figuring out. I am not sure what the original size was or where to look for one. Any help here would be great. The other areas I am not quite sure about is at the end of the housing by the prop it looks like there should be some kind of seal there.and possibly a thrust bearing under the gear on the driveshaft. If there is more please let me know.
Now for the parts I am hoping to find. The prop shaft is pretty worn as well as the gears.
Or if I were to really get lucky, maybe someone has a lower unit they would like to sell! I will post over in the classified area as well.
Thanks,

You might consider replacing the entire gearcase with the later, more available style so you can run the motor. I’ve always found that parts seem easier to find after you’ve found a temporary solution.

Thanks,

June 10, 2020 at 12:04 am #205276Lower units from an earlier motor will work, but you’d best be sticking with the style that was sold on the 39-41 motors like the one you have. Chances are pretty good that there is a parts motor out there somewhere with a decent usable foot on it.
Most of your parts are footched, but I’ve seen worse (and fixed it)
The prop shaft is not a difficult piece to machine if you have access to a lathe, or have a buddy who does and would make you one in exchange for a case of beer.
There is a long bushing that supports the driveshaft just below the water pump; if the rest of your lower unit looks that bad, that bushing has to go as well.
The bronze carrier near the front end of the prop shaft in the photos can be bored out and rebushed to get it back to original size. Ditto for the rear cover; that bearing can be pressed out and replaced. But don’t try to use Oilite bushings. Bearings machined out of SAE 660 bronze are preferable.
Gears are going to be a pain, especially the one with the internal spline, and for that reason most folks would classify this gearfoot as scrap and try to find a complete replacement.
Anyway, good luck in your search.
Hope this helps.

June 10, 2020 at 10:13 am #205286The search is on. I will continue on with getting top end cleaned up and running properly as well as work on the bushings and prop shaft. I have plenty of other projects to keep me busy while I wait. The nice thing is that being in Minnesota old outboards are like Easter eggs. They are everywhere, you just have to find them.
Also, what is that bushing that was blown into pieces. The parts were in the middle of the rear cover near the prop.
Thanks for all your help on this. I never thought I would get into these bigger motors but I find myself really enjoying it. If only I were 30 years younger. They are quite cumbersome. I have a Elto Quad to dig into yet as well.
Thanks,
PaulJune 10, 2020 at 4:32 pm #205314Three possibilities for where that shredded bearing came from.
Driveshaft bearing that is above the drive pinion
The bronze shaft carrier.
The rear coverIt could also be shim stock that somebody stuck in there to take up clearance, but it might be too thick for shim stock. I can’t really tell from the picture anyway.
If I had to bet, I’d wager that the shaft carrier had a bushing pressed into it and that is what came out and gave you the current situation.
Hope this helps.
