I picked up a old 13’ aluminum boat and an Evinrude Sportwin motor. The flywheel will not spin at all, as far as I know the motor was kept inside but not sure how long or if it was ran dry. The prop won’t turn when in gear but spins nicely in neutral. With a quick google search I found it might be seized and atf might help out. It’s been 3 days and it hasn’t budged.
The number on the serial number tag reads 10024m 51061, no other visible tags that I can see.
Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks!

remove the lower unit and see if it is the powerhead or lower that is frozen.

What model number Sportwin? There were many different types, spanning decades. Generally speaking, the idea would be to put a strap wrench on the flywheel and see if it breaks free. Do NOT, NOT, put a breaker bar on the flywheel nut and try to turn it that way. There is a very high probability of destroying the flywheel, if you were to do that….If it won’t break free and turn with a strap wrench, then in my opinion, the power head would have to be removed and disassembled. Like Dave says, by all means, remove the lower unit and see if it’s the gear case that is actually stuck; but with an Evinrude, my money is on the power head.

try pulling the cyl. head if it proves to the a PH issue.

Soak the pistons with wd-40 wd … PB blaster and like products  let it sit for a few days to soak in  then start tapping the pistons with short firm taps  alternating the cyl and keep an eye on FW  mouvement  ( mark a referrence  mark with a marker).  use a 1 inch round  wood dowel)

if no mouvement …. try to resoak a few more days try again … took me a week  and half  to free up a  badly stuck 9.5hp and to this day it works great as my kicker .

if no success then proceed with  investigation  of the innards

As an alternative to removing the cylinder head;  you can very easily remove the two intake covers and get a glimpse of the cylinder condition.  Less chance of breaking bolts off.  This area also provides another entry point for solvents etc.

Those are wonderful motors;  lots of folks here really like them.  Tons of parts available as well….up to and including used powerheads….so if yours is seized beyond repair that can be a simple option.

By 1962 the Sportwin had received upgrades in rods…..a beefier setup than prior year Sportwins.

good point  on bypass cover access but….if truly stuck  wooden dowel bashing  will require  cyl. head removal …but agree BP covers may do  it  🙂

I find that gentle… use of a 1/4”   impact driver helps
