Since I am not an Evinrude guy, I’ve come to the BB for some assistance. I have come across a 1964 Evinrude Starflight VI 75 horse power outboard in very nice condition. The model number is 75483D. This motor came out of Kentucky and was only run in fresh water. The motor has two props, lower unit was serviced, starboard head was replaced because of a stripped spark plug thread, tel-tel added to alert operator if impeller not pumping, new fuel connection installed, new parts purchased to rebuild the fuel pump but not installed yet, has the original Evinrude throttle control with a new pushbutton switch installed, and has the square box that mounts to the boat for controlling the motor. This motor had been sitting in a garage for several years since last being started.

The $64 question is what is this outboard motor worth?

      Thanks,
      Bill Austin

Bill; Those motors had some things (electric shift gearcase) that people didn’t care for. Mainly because they didn’t understand how to work on them. Now they have expensive parts in them. It is imperative that no water be in the gearcase. The push button switch gave more problems than the Johnson switch for some reason, but the Johnson switch is NLA. The Evinrude switch is expensive & there is two different styles for the different electric shift engines.
A few pics would help to tell if the engine is indeed in good shape? The wiring harness needs to be in good shape. That’s a tough one on a motor of 50 something years old? It is all in the beholder, but they don’t bring much money unless in exceptional shape. Oh, they are hard on fuel consumption so you might want to run it sparingly. Just trying to be realistic.

t2stroke did give a realistic reply. I might add that the electric shift models way outsold the manual shift versions when new–at least they did where I worked. There is nothing really bad about the electric shifts except the bad opinions/reputations they have developed over the years, and as t2 said, that is due mostly to people do not understand them and are afraid of them. Yes, the electrical system is the chief problem now, with usually rotted wires and trashed junction boxes. On the other hand, the ’64 has an automotive style ignition system (no electonic ignition), meaning simple and not a bank-breaker to fix. New for ’64 was the hot-air heated automatic choke, a big improvement over the previous water heated one. And there is that $$$$$ push button shift switch. And some other NLA/expensive parts. But that problem is not confined to just your motor.

              T2stroke and Frank R,
Thanks for the reply. I’ll post some pictures later today. I live in Saint Mary’s GA and I am still cleaning up the mess from Irma. Looking forward to getting back to the boat project.

I was recently at the national meet of the ACBS held here in Racine Wisconsin. Our chapter had a nice display of motors there. Getting back on topic, there were at least 3 of the 75 hp. V-4 OMC motors there in service. I was thoroughly impressed. One owner did mention that on his, the electric shift prevented his depth finder/sonar from working. He had to mount a transducer on a remote post away from the lower unit for it to work. Just a neat clash of technology.

Saint Mary’s eh? Crooked River State Park is our regular overnite campground on our way to Wilmington NC to visit the kids. The no-seeums at Crooked River gots big teeth.

You going to run that motor in salt water? It’ll take it as well as any, but you might find the lower unit a bear to get apart when it gets nicely welded together by corrosion around the studs. But the manual shift does the same thing. Think hacksaw.

                    FrankR,
This motor has never been run in salt water. It came on a boat that was purchased in Kentucky. The boat was purchased from the son of the original owner several years ago. This motor spent its entire life in an enclosed building.

Trying to post some pictures of the motor. This BB appears to be one of the those that require a hosting site for photos. I just hate that!

Yeah, I know, you said it is a KY motor. My question was are you going to run it in salt water?
