All five of my model 4404 Zephyr’s have a twist grip throttle,
and my older model 4362 also has a twist grip throttle,
but it has a metal twist knob instead of the plastic knobs
the 4404’s have.I was perusing EBay, and seen this 4404 with “no” twist
grip throttle.
I did not know this was an option. There must be differences
in the carb and mag plate in order to operate the throttle
off of the mag plate advance lever. Was “no” twist grip throttle an option, or the twist grip an option,
and did they sell both at the same time?
If so, how did they designate the differences if both were designated model # 4404?P.S.- I was going to further my Zephyr education by looking at articles
in past “Antique Outboarders” magazine articles, Alas, none of
the available scanned magazines in the ten year period have Zephyr’s
listed, but three shown, not available, in the 1990’s. 🙁

June 19, 2021 at 3:02 pm #240660I thought all Zephyrs had the twist grip but apparently not! Am going to delve into this a bit more.

I would be interested in seeing how the carb and mag are sync’d, and I wonder
if there’s parts diagrams for these models?Prepare to be boarded!
June 19, 2021 at 3:43 pm #240667I didn’t find any good candidates to replace the old prop shaft seal.
The old “shot” one is a deep affair that had a rib on the OD in the
center, that located the seal in a groove in the housing bore.
What came out almost seemed like plastic, but perhaps petrified rubber.I made up a heavy leather seal with a thin washer and a snap ring
to lock it in place. At least better than what was in there.Prepare to be boarded!
June 21, 2021 at 10:32 am #240824I have a Zephyr with no twist grip throttle. I have owned 2 of them. I can check it to see what model it is when I get home in about 3 weeks. Your picture of your speed lever looks like it is missing the correct handle for raising and lowering the speed.
I do believe it is a 4404 also but will have to check.
I also own 2 with the twist grip throttles. I don’t know their model numbers either but can check.
Hope that helps,
Joeps this is one that looks like my speed lever I found on ebay. The guy has the model picture on auction but I can’t make out the numbers but it looks like it ends in a 4. I did send him a message asking him what it is.

June 21, 2021 at 11:58 am #240834The ’48 Sportsman and Sportwin motors I restored a few years ago had a similar style prop shaft seal with a raised rib on its outer surface which snapped into a retaining groove in the housing. Since they were NLA, I found similar size SKF lip seals with a smooth outer surface and used an adhesive to hold them in place. After all these years, both motors still haven’t leaked a drop of oil. I wonder if the P/N’s for the originals are the same?

Thanks Joe, When you get home some photos “under the hood” of your
non-twist grip Zephyr would be great.Prepare to be boarded!

If I remember correctly, when I looked on the SKF site, all I could match
up for prop shaft seals was some skinny 1/8″ deep ones,
costing more than I wanted to pay on EBay anyway. If you have the seals you used documented anywhere, it would
be nice to know the part number, in case I tear into one or two
more of my Zephyrs.
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
June 22, 2021 at 1:14 am #240867From an older post here:
If you have to change the prop and drive shaft seals, I just did my 4425 and 4423 Rudes and used SKF 5523 and 4770 seals. They aren’t snap in like the originals but with a bit of adhesive sealer they will work.
Them’s the SKF part numbers! Would have to compare P/N’s between 4423/4425 and Zephyr gearcase seals to see if they will work.
