This is what I think of when I hear Evinrude Zephyr.
April 7, 2015 at 2:51 pm #13477I have a couple of Evinrude Zepher 4004’s that I used to run back in the early
70’s with limited success. When they were running good, they were really
smooth. Most days though, I’d carry one down the hill to the lake,
attach to the boat, and it wouldn’t start!
Both are on my "list" of outboards to fix up. Glad to hear they’re
not too overwhelming to work on. I remember that the plastic
rotory throttle valve in the carb broke on one, and my
Uncle had a new aluminum one machined where he worked at Whirlpool.
Anyone have a list of modern parts numbers for the Zephers,
ie, rings, bearings, seals, etc, that fit these outboards?Prepare to be boarded!

April 7, 2015 at 5:07 pm #13490I know my lovely wife saw one dolled up at the MOB meet in Monticello, IN and thought it was cool.
Out in the parking lot Rick Eichrodt was selling the twin cylinder sister to it, and my wife wanted it. So we bought it. Rick assured us it ran well.
Then at an informal get together of the MOB Maumee Marauders…the host gave a Zephyr that he acquired between time.
I’ve printed all the stuff for her to read. Wonder when she’ll get it running for me…
Hehehe!
Seriously…I’m looking forward to tinkering on it, thought I don’t hold out too much hope for it in general. But who knows.
Beside…for my wife…it’ll be worth it!

April 7, 2015 at 5:39 pm #13493I wrote this up for the 1942/1945 model – later motors have alnico flywheel magnets and a more reliable ignition.
They synchronized throttle and ignition in later models, eliminating the twist grip tiller. Customer complaints made them bring it back on later models. The push button primer was another addition’ as the old method of pushing the float pin down had a tendency to flood the motor with fuel.

April 7, 2015 at 6:52 pm #13501My very first outboard was a 1946 Evinrude Zephyr 4404-00066 The engineering on it is partly was got me intrigues about outboards and my addiction soon followed. I’ve restored two of them pretty early on. Like others have said here, they’re a lot simpler than you think. Nice Zephyr, Mumbles

Very cool, X 2!
Hey, the Zephyrs are miniature 460’s or are the 460’s oversized Zephyrs?
460’s were used in the quarter midget race cars so a Zephyr should do good in a kart!
Good looking Zephyr Wedge!
