I love the recent post about using crud cutter as a possible paint stripper. I’m also curious about what everyone’s favorite product is for cleaning up old greasy outboards. Crud cutter degreaser, mineral spirits, Simple Green, Dawn detergent… list goes on and on. What do the experts like you guys say?

For those cruddy motors with old, hardened grease that nothing seems to penetrate, oven cleaner works pretty well without being destructive.  It does destroy paint color though, so plan on refinishing.

I have used a steam cleaner. You still need to agitate the hardened grease with a stiff bristle brush of course.  I would recommend NOT putting  degreaser in the steamer itself as it will cause corrosion of the steamer.  🙁

I use stale fuel mix as an initial degreaser.  Even fresh gasoline is still cheaper than mineral spirits etc. Follow up  rinse with soap and water.

I second old stale gas for an initial wash.  A good water soluble commercial degreaser from a janitorial supplier will remove any remaining oil or grease film. My favorite elixir now is called AB-50.

Soaking parts in good old-fashioned gasoline has worked for me.

Thanks everyone for your input. I never really thought about using stale gasoline as a cleanser, but I can see the value of it considering the price of mineral spirits and lacquer thinner.

Purple Power degreaser is my tool of choice for cleaning and degreasing, although it can dull a paint finish..    Citristrip paint stripper for paint removal.
