I’m combining two FD11 to make one good. One of them had only a single base gasket(obviously incorrect),the other had gasket-plate-gasket.Looking at parts list,it lists plate and gaskets separately and states that early serial serial numbers order a different combo. Why?I plan to put earlier power head with plate and gaskets on the later lower unit and gear case.Is there some clearance issue involved?

The baffle plate and two thinner gaskets were a change to keep water & exhaust away from the lower crankshaft seal. If you had one without the plate, you were supposed to add it. OK, really, the plate didn’t prove to be much help. If you have it, I’d say use it. Don’t have one? Lots of guys just use two of the thin gaskets. Might be some different opinions on this.
