I have what I believe to be a 1957 18 hp Evinrude. There was fishing line behind the prop that got into the seal. I think I have it all out but it is still leaking so I need to replace it. I see there is a couple seals that are listed for it but not sure what the diference is other than the price. One is a 313284 and the other is a 302495 and thats what is in it now. I think i can get a hole in it to put a screw in it and then pull the old one out and i made a tool to drive the new one in but not sure what to order. Any one know what the diference is? Motor serial number is 1502-12389. Got it running after it sat for years and want to put a waterpump in it and replace that seal! Thanks for any help. Jim
June 8, 2020 at 8:30 pm #205165There was a production change in the ’57 models where they changed the outside diameter of the seal. If you have the 302495 in there now, that’s what you need again. Unfortunately, it’s more expensive than the 313284. Chris-P here on the forum was making some 302495 seals some time ago at a good price – maybe he will see this and weigh in.
Edit – I think the 302495 is like 1-1/2″ OD and the 313284 is 1-1/8″ OD. Just went through this on my ’57 18hp. Mine had the later 1-1/8″ seal. I’ve seen various stories saying the production change was made on motor serial numbers 7000 and up and other saying it was on models serial number 22000 and up.

June 9, 2020 at 5:23 am #205177It gets even more confusing if the gearcase head/bearing/seal assembly has been replaced at sometime in the past. The new size supersedes the old size.
June 9, 2020 at 8:10 am #205180Looks like I will have to just get the expensive one! I have another complete lower unit but its from a 1958 long shaft and it looks like the lower unit has to be apart to change the shift rod unlike my 9.9s that would just unscrew.
June 9, 2020 at 9:04 am #205187Is there a part number for a seal kit? Thinking I would do the whole lower unit?
June 9, 2020 at 9:29 am #205193Sierra kit 18-2684 will work on the later model ’57s, but I don’t believe there is a complete “kit” for the earlier model like yours – Sierra doesn’t have a seal equivalent to the OMC 302495. But you can order the individual oil seals, O-rings, etc. off Marine Engine, including the 302495 seal. There is another equivalent to the 302495, which is an SKF 6280. You can find those for a little less cost than the OMC seal.
A correction from my post last night is the 302495 seal is 1.25″ OD.
Here’s the link to Marine Engine:

June 9, 2020 at 8:33 pm #205253try vintageoutboard.com folks they have seal kits or may possibly assemble one for you if you call them with what you have and what you need
if you are going to open the gearcase may as well do the drive shaft alsos and the shift rod o-ring …. up to you..

June 10, 2020 at 3:50 pm #205311Good to know about vintageoutboard.com if I end up going that far. I will start out with the prop seal and see what happens. I have a 1958 that I took the fuel pump conversion off and put it on this one as I dont have the proper tank. It had the part from a 1961 that the fuel pump connects to and a fuel pump so easy to do. If it comes to it and just that seal dosent take care of it I might just put the other lower unit on but that one will have to come apart as it has the long shift rod.
June 22, 2020 at 6:02 pm #206446My prop seal looks like it will be here tomorrow! Should i use a sealer on the outside edge? Aviation gasket cement ok if so? Thanks, Jim
