I’m at the stage in the Flambeau project
to start “putting it back together”.When I took apart this “stuck”, oddball engine,
I came to the conclusion that it probably never
ran after the last time a previous person
worked on it, as part of the “stuck” problem
was the cylinder “skirt end” was smashed down
into, and cracking the piston skirt, as the
cylinder alignment pin was “not” aligned.
The other “stuck” problem was the top ring
on the top cylinder was a little rusty, but
that would have happened after it was long
abandoned.Seeing how it didn’t run after the last guy worked
on it, I have no idea if the pistons were
assembled in the cylinders correctly, and
the nice little diagram I made when I took
it apart, may be worthless.I’ve past learned from the “Sages” here, that the
long, slopping, “ramp” side of the piston goes
toward the exhaust ports, and the “step” side
goes toward the intake ports.
This knowledge is not helping me on this Flambeau.
No matter which way the piston is inserted, only
a portion of the intake ports will be on the “Step”
side of the piston. In the “As Found” position, the 3rd port and 1-1/2
(of the 3) intake ports fall on the “Ramp”, or
conventional “exhaust side” of the piston. If I were to install the piston “NOT” the way found
when I took it apart, that is, to rotate it 180 degrees,
the so-called 3rd port and 1-1/2 (of the three) intake ports fall
on the step side.It would seem “more correcter” to install the piston oposite
of the way I found it, but I’m having lack of conviction
in doing so. If I find out I installed them wrong, and go
to all the trouble and mess sealing the case halves together,
it’s likely not coming back apart again, lolOnly one of my old outboard repair books even mention
Flambeau, and they are calling it a “Three port” engine,
but I could glean nothing else useful from the book,
regarding putting the engine together correctly!Ideally, if someone had documentation from some obscure manual,
or photos showing the correct orientation of the pistons,
I’d be forever grateful. If not, your knowledge and thoughts
appreciated anyway!Prepare to be boarded!
March 22, 2020 at 5:27 pm #198014P.S.- If someone had a running Flambeau, a kind person may look in the spark plug
hole to confirm the orientation, ie., ramp / step of piston. 🙂Prepare to be boarded!
March 22, 2020 at 6:38 pm #198032Maybe Pine Tree Boating Club could help
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUT83Ot7htoMarch 22, 2020 at 6:53 pm #198034Davy sent me a photo of his Flambeau, and it appears that the piston “Step”
in on the opposite side of the cylinder locating notch.
Of course, if others want to confirm, that would be great!
I’ve watched that video a few times before……. hope I can make my
own video this summer on my Flambeau running!Prepare to be boarded!

Is there lead in a lead pencil?
March 22, 2020 at 8:59 pm #198077Fifty21, Wow, thanks for the info!
From the cut-a-way, it would appear that the piston step is
on the starboard side. Assuming that the cut up Flambeau
was correct, that would be a great help, especially if
it match up what I believe from Davy’s photo.
I’ll have to take all my tips to the garage tomorrow and
see if I can reach a happy conclusion.I’ve looked in the archives previously, and found two articles, but did not see
Wayne’s info, which looks to be very helpful!
Much appreciated!Prepare to be boarded!

March 22, 2020 at 10:46 pm #198094Hi Bucc,
Glad I was able to help!
I don’t own a Flambeau
But I did remember the
Cut-away display! In AO
And Neds Tomahawk site.
I enjoy all your projects
With all the great clear
Pictures!
I believe the cut-way
Motor may belong to
Peter Hunn per Wayne.
Not sure if it was done at
Factory or someone
Duplicated factory display?Bob
