I am trying to remove the flywheel on a 1957 Johnson 35hp Seahorse. I bought a Bolt wheelpuller set at Harobr Freight, but that set does not seem to have three (3) bolts that are the correct fit. Any advice will be greatly approieciated. Thanks.

try a 1/4 20 tpi  if the  bolts you  have are to big

DO NOT  screw the bolts down to  far otherwise they will  hit ignition components . I use reversed  nylon nuts as stoppers

and they keep me from  searching for the bolts in the bin box. 🙂

I don’t recommend these pullers for flywheels on these larger engines.  It is always best to use the OMC flywheel puller kit, much stronger.  Using lesser pullers can result in broken bolts, and injury.

Prior to owning the OMC Universal Puller, I had a Harbor Freight harmonic balancer puller. The puller did not come with the 1/4-20 bolts that are needed for the smaller OMC motors. Had to buy the bolts and washers.

Besides the depth of embedment, it’s also very important that the bolts are embedded to the exact same depth. crosbyman has a good idea with the nylon stops to achieve this. It’s easy to strip threads on a stubborn flywheel when the bolts are not even.

The OMC puller has some awesome shoulder screws that when installed properly keep the puller exactly even. The measurement from end of screw to the shoulder is 13/32″ which would be a good dimension to set your stoppers at.

Fleetwin brings up a good point about the quality of the tool. Larger motors have more torque on the flywheel and therefore put more stress on the puller/bolts. I would assume that the H.F. puller is made from pot metal. The OMC tool is very well made.

I’ll try to post a picture of my puller bolts.
I used shrink tubing on my bolts.
                It works pretty good.
Sorry, can’t post the pic, it’s too big/

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I email my pics to myself using Outlook. The gui asks if I want to keep or reduce image size. I choose reduce and get good quality pics sized way down for our site. Just my experience

I go to my local hardware store and buy Allen-head shoulder bolts.  I have more trouble finding appropriate washers.
