Hey Dan, FYI: I just ordered this 0378103 puller from boats.net for $62.95. I found prices on the web as high as $117. Marine engine.com was relatively cheap too at $69.95.
June 15, 2016 at 3:58 pm #38341I made my puller out of a piece of 3/8" steel bar stock. I use the center bolt from a 3-arm gear puller and grade 8’S for the flywheel. I was in a hurry when I made it so it isn’t the prettiest thing but it works. I haven’t had to tackle any really tough ones with it yet but the puller body will pull the bolts in two before it gives up. And yes, the impact has been my friend on the more stubborn ones I have dealt with. This includes power equipment flywheels, gears, and pulleys as well as outboards.

June 29, 2016 at 1:04 am #39184I got my OMC puller in the mail last week and tried it yesterday. It worked great! I put in the bolts and put my air impact wrench on the center bolt. The compressor had only pumped up to about 50 pounds, but in a few seconds I had the flywheel off! it’s amazing what the right tools can do. I messed around with the Harbor Freight bolt puller for two weeks.
As I suspected, this 1961 40 HP Lark had original coils, and most of you know what they looked like. I replaced them today and now have spark.
Thanks for the tip on the OMC puller.FYI: My first bolt puller, I made myself when I was 14 in 1961 form scrap metal Dad had laying around to get the flywheel off my 1953 Champion 8.4 HP model 4LHD Hydro-Drive motor that I ran on a hydroplane I had just built. I’d never even seen a bolt puller, but just figured out what it had to look like to get the flywheel off. I used two slabs of 1/8 inch steel.

Got mine today!A friend has had one for years and I’ve used his before but he’s 700 miles away.
Thanks for the link on the great price.
June 29, 2016 at 10:10 am #39212Agreed. Once you use the OMC puller, you won’t want anything else. A must for any outboard shop. By the way, you can also get the optional lifting eye attachment, that allows the puller to be used as a lifting point. The long bolts with the kit are used to pull lower unit bearing carriers.
June 29, 2016 at 2:35 pm #39232The OMC puller is a must, especially in situations like this one. The air impact gun on the center bolt sure helps also, and the puller/bolts can take it.
