DO NOT take the flywheel nut completely off when pulling the flywheel… unless you want to remove some of your (yes your own) teeth.
Loosen the nut and back it off a couple of turns, leave the nut in place.

April 6, 2021 at 5:29 am #23573840 flywheels are as bad as they come, to remove. Read and re-read Garry-in-Michigan’s advice and do everything he says, especially using an OMC flywheel puller; otherwise there is a very good chance you won’t be getting it off.
Long live American manufacturing!

April 6, 2021 at 8:43 am #235746Thanks everyone for all the great advice. Guess it’s my luck to start on one with such a hard flywheel to remove! Joecb, got a chuckle out of your comment about losing some teeth!
I could see where when it “pops off” it could go flying, good to know. My mug is ugly enough without adding missing teeth to the picture!
I’m not sure how the OMC flywheel puller looks but will start the hunt to find one. Hopefully it’s not a discontinued product but there is always Ebay. Managed to find a prop test wheel for
this outboard so probably there is an OMC puller out there too!April 6, 2021 at 9:08 am #235749Crowley Marine has a good price for the OMC Puller PN 0378103. I shopped around a couple of years ago, and this was the best deal, at that time, for a new one.

April 6, 2021 at 9:13 am #235755Thanks aquasonic. I’ll check them out. Saw one at mastertech marine on ebay but not sure if it’s the correct one or not. they were asking $119 + $11 shipping +tax.

is how I got mine off.
The flywheel key was “galled” bad, but I don’t know if that had anything to
do with it not wanting to pop off.
Hopefully yours comes off better!Prepare to be boarded!

April 6, 2021 at 9:23 am #235765Just ordered the Crowley Marine puller, thanks again for the heads up on where to look and the OMC part number. The puller is way better than the universal puller set I picked up
at harbor freight!April 6, 2021 at 9:36 am #235766 -
