I am getting differing opinions….1960 Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman. Should I use 16:1 or 24 :1? This is a recent purchase so I have not run it yet. Thanks in advance all.

a good quality outboard oil at 24:1 should be fine. no harm with going a little richer… just more smoke.

Your 1960 Fisherman still has sleeve type bearings on the rods and called for a 16:1 mix. The ’61 motors were the first year motors with needle bearings on the rods and also the first year for 24:1 mix being used with these motors. That lasted until ’64 when 50:1 became the norm.

Yes i believe the original specs (for that generation of plain bearing engines) was 16:1 (1/2 pint per gal.) mobileoil outboard or SAE 30 mix… not sure the quality of the original stuff. This was before my time. I’ve always understood that modern TCw3 is better stuff so mixes can be a little leaner. I have ’57 Viking 5hp that ran for years and years on 24:1 TCw3. In any event you can’t go wrong with a heaver mix.

Like Mumbles said, yours is a plain sleeve type bearing motor, Clearances weren’t very tight, since machining techniques were not as close as modern days. Those clearances is why your motor needs QUANTITY, not quality of oil. The oil film is what keeps bad things from happening between the bearings and crank, rods, pins, etc. As many would say, oil is cheaper than parts.

If you have too many, AND not enough, you're a collector.

Ok since I use Amsoil anyway I’m going with 16:1. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

Too much oil never killed a motor, and the Amsoil full synthetic doesn’t smoke that bad 🤫
