I bought this package spring of 2021.  Peterborough Dart 1958. Motor  is also a 1958. Origin condition. It came with two fuel tanks also in great condition. There is some varnish in the tanks. What can I use to clean it that won’t hurt the cork floats?

Not sure if there’d be any  shellac coating left on the cork after all these years but if there is, ethanol fuel will supposedly dissolve it so you are stuck using high test $$$ non ethanol.

I wonder what folks are using as a cork float replacement these days? Probably lots of options that can be made to fit.

First, I would take the fuel tank manifolds off so you will not damage the cork fuel level float.  I think you might be able to make a float if the ones are in bad same, just seal them over with model airplane dope or super glue.  Next, I would use either E85 and pour it in the tank and let it sit for a couple of days.  Another choice is to use “Super Clean” and pour it in full strength.  Now with “Super Clean” (comes in a purple container not to be confused with Purple Power) be careful with paint.  Super Clean will eat paint at the drop of a hat.  If you use the E85 gasoline, do it outside in the open air, not in a confined space like the basement.  Drop in some door chain and you can use it as an agitator to loosen up the gunk on the bottom.  Once clean, wash the tank out with soap and water like Dawn dish soap.

Any idea where I can purchase a rebuild kit for the suitcase tank?
