Guys, not at home right now and could use a little help.
I have a 40 hp Gale Powerhead I believe. Serial Number on the welch plug of the powerhead is 0029676. It has 040 Pistons in it, casting number 304711 inside pistons. Did a search and only an ebay ad comes up. They have that number crossed to 378059. THis could be the part number. Was wondering if anyone can verify what I have here, as well as the part number for the rings that go with these pistons thanks.
August 20, 2017 at 11:59 pm #63538Im not doing you any good. Looking in my "Common Parts Reference Guide" (Johnson) I only see .025 oversize pistons for RD-22/23. They don’t show .040 till 33hp motors. That’s not the way I remember it, but that’s what I am seeing in both the ’73 & ’76 editions. Looking in a 1970 Parts/Price book doesn’t cross any of the part numbers you gave. I don’t have any Gale parts manuals that go up to 40hp, just the ’59 35s. I tried.
Maybe someone else will have a different source & chime in.Dan in TN
August 21, 2017 at 12:13 am #63539OK, one more try. 1967 Evinrude Quick Reference Guide. .040 piston for Big Twin/Lark thru model #35517 is #377074 with rings .040 #478438. Does that help?

August 21, 2017 at 1:05 am #63544For some reason, which I do not know, The Gale 40’s have unique piston part numbers, not used by J/E. The standard 1961 piston is 593434,
and the standard 1962-63 piston is 593567. No oversize pistons are listed in those parts books. Ring sets are 378430 (std) for allAugust 21, 2017 at 1:36 am #63552The rest of the story! Thanks FrankR! I knew I had chased this before. The first piston number #593434 doesn’t go anywhere as you stated. The second one #593567 SS to a piston kit #384698 which has 2 pistons, wrist pins, & rings with instructions to install all as a kit. That number is the same as J/E 40hp motors of the era & stayed the same for a long time after. The #378430 rings SS to #308108 which are still good today, but no oversize are shown so Chris, I do not know where your .040 pistons came from in your motor unless it is a 35hp in disguise? Does it have the big crank?
FrankR do you have the bore & stroke handy on the 40hp Gale engine from the early 60s? Hard to believe it would be different!
Thanks!Dan in TN
August 21, 2017 at 9:41 am #63571Thanks guys for your help!
I found the rest of the motor now. The powerhead came off of a 1958 Gale Buccaneer 35hp. They are definitely 040 pistons though, perhaps they are not for a 40hp like I thought? The powerhead has been transplanted onto this motor though. I can see how the last owner even changed the welch plug with the serial number on it.
October 9, 2017 at 1:44 pm #65948Thanks for the Part Numbers Dan, going to need them now! Last ring to drop in on the second piston broke on me. Darn it. Off to the classifieds to find another set. I have tons of std 35hp rings handy, but no 040 rings.
Definitely NOT a 40hp either, to clean up this story. It is simply a 35hp bored to 040
