I purchased a outboard at an auction yesterday that has a decal that says Gambles. It looks like a Neptune. I remember Gambles hardware stores when I was younger. Can anybody identify the motor or provide some history? I can’t find much information. Alan

In perusing The Old Outboard Book by Peter Hunn, I was able to find this motor in The Back Rack chapter. It is indeed a Neptune product "with a blue and yellow logo on a red fuel tank", per The Old Outboard Book. Interestingly, Mr. Hunn only references a motor called a "100" and opines that it looked like a 1.5 HP model 17A1 which would make it a 1947. While I can’t see your picture clearly, there appears to be a number on the back of the tank. Can you post a picture of that, or tell us what it is?

FYI, Gambles stores were better known for selling Scott-Atwater motors branded "Hiawatha" outboards in the 1950s.

The number on the decal is "2hp". Yes, the information in the "Old Outboard Book" was the only information I could find also. There are no decals or stamping of 100. Thank you.

Go on E-Bay and look for "Antique Neptune Outboard decals". There is a photo of a restored 2 HP Neptune with the identical decals as your motor. The decals are offered for $16. Gambles sold Neptunes with their label. In 1948 Gambles will have their private label motors built by OMC Gale and labeled Hiawathas…

Why not contact the decal seller who has a restored motor? The decals are still for sale.

Looks like it might be a 1940 model. The Muncie-Neptune series model numbers start with a 10A, or a 10B. This was by looking at a website that a couple AOMCI members have up. Type in Muncie-Neptune.com to find the site.
