When replacing a gear in a gear case. Can a person just buy one?
Or should a person purchase all of them. Are the gears a matched set?December 28, 2022 at 8:36 am #270348It depends on the gearcase. If the parts book lists part numbers for individual gears, then replacing them individually is fine. Needless to say, there are all sorts of traps to fall into here though. Part number changes, supercessions, etc. The other gears/teeth should be inspected closely as well, no sense in replacing just one gear if the teeth are worn on the other gears as well.
Is there a particular engine/part number you are working with?

I’ll keep looking for the forward and reverse gear numbers.

December 28, 2022 at 5:45 pm #270374When I was rebuilding mine, somewhere or another I found a breakdown of the individual gear set numbers. I thought it was filed on my computer but I lost some files when my laptop crashed and burned a few weeks ago, as I can’t put my hands on it right now. I’m still looking. Since my last post I did find the clutch dog part number is 375783.

"Every time you remove a broken or seized bolt an angel gets his wings."December 29, 2022 at 1:44 am #270399These are the numbers in my ’69 Parts Reference Manual for RDE-16 thru RDE-19 : Fwd Gear 375759, R Gear 302517, Pinion 375835, Gear Set 375861 My ’79 Manual lists the same numbers, so apparently they weren’t superseded by then..
December 29, 2022 at 2:16 pm #270403My humble opinion … the gear sets in our antique and classic outboards are not sophisticated enough to have been manufactured in lapped -in matched pairs. So, with some reasonable consideration to replacing individual gears that don’t have excessive wear or broken teeth, should be no problem. Now this is likely not the case for modern large horsepower outboards.

December 29, 2022 at 2:41 pm #270405retiredoz- thank you for the numbers. My 1964 Parts reference guide does not show individual gears.
I heard a LONG time ago that the forward and reverse gear are the same except for the inside bearing. So in theory a person could use a arbor press on the inside bearing and reverse the gears . What I am trying to do is gather up parts from various gear cases I have to make one.Through my research # 25 and # 36 roller bearings were used in a 1960 40 hp RDS-22December 29, 2022 at 3:34 pm #270406OK, I can also confirm the same numbers provided by retiredoz. I finally located my file record on gear set numbers – see enclosed.
