Hi just changing a impeller on this 1982 7.5 evinrude, thought i would check the gear case lube and it looks nice an clean but would appear to be fairly thin stuff. Not sure have not worked on anything this modern lol. So wondered if someone could quickly tell me what lube is right for this gear case. Model no.

April 21, 2023 at 12:49 pm #275381Thanks changing for the son of a buddy, so no manual in sight, dealer what’s that? the nearest one is two hours away and they seldom answer questions, lol. Used to working on the 1950/60 stuff just wondered if this took something new. I will change with the 90 w that I usually use, thanks for the help.
April 21, 2023 at 3:06 pm #275383What kind of oil goes in outboard lower unit? You can use any brand of lubricant that has a grade designation of API GL5 SAE 80 or 90 weight. Make sure you do not mix different oil brands or weights. into the BOTTOM drain hole. Then slowly squeeze the bottle to force the oil up into the lower unit.Joining AOMCI has priviledges 🙂

These gearcases have a design flaw, that must be due to cost cutting. There is no bronze bushing between the reverse gear and prop shaft bushing/seal hsg, which leads to overheated lube/breakdown, especially on engines used as tenders/sailboats that use reverse gear frequently. So change your gear lube often.
April 22, 2023 at 7:29 pm #275434Oh’and another thing while we are on the subject. API GL 5 and likely GL 4 is OK. Do not use GL 6 as this has a sulfur compound additive that attacks brass/ bronze parts that are in many (all ?) of our outboard gear cases.

i didn’t know that about the sulfer in the GL 6. Thanks so much for the education! I always learn here.

April 22, 2023 at 8:40 pm #275437You want gear oil rated for marine use on the container, not automotive gear oil. Marine gear oil has additives to protect the internals in case water gets in and also has antifoaming additives which is necessary in an unvented gearcase.
