I have a 3 hp. Lightwin Evirude that I got a couple years ago. Today I took it out and started it up. It took a long time to start, then finally did. But after a short while it no longer ran at higher speeds and shut down. I didn’t drain the gas over the winter though I did put in some gas additive. Is something plugged up? Why does it take so long to start when cold? What do I do? I’m open to all suggestions and remonstrance!

fuel flow may be restricted from the tank’s inner filter  above  the valve ,

the carb’s low speed circuit feeding fuel to the top drip holes maybe clogged…..

first thing to do is clean  & rebuild the carb.. all orifices all passages and blowed with air pressure. (use a keyboard spray can if you have no compressor)

check for sparks… coils maybe all cracked under the  fw.  points  can be usually cleaned and adjusted  but condensers  may be  bad .

        • replace the impeller if age or condition  is unknown

all basic  oldies revival stuff   etc… etc…    see articles

As  a AOMCI member  you could have  downloaded  yourself a copy of the 400 page +  johnson red book… it is worth it !! if you plan servicing oldies

Check Crosbymans links for the details .

My first thought is cracked coils. Almost certain they are cracked if original. You should also clean the fuel system and check impeller and gear oil .

Was it running good last year? What maintenance have you performed on the motor in the 2 years you’ve had it? Have you checked compression? All good advice above. If those motors have compression, spark and gas they will start easy,  run great and idle down to a putt-put-putt. I’ve had many and they are great motors and practically bullet – proof.
