Got the re-worked mag back on the HD-15 today,
and it has "spark", so I proceeded to the lower unit.
Pretty sad sight. Prop shaft is "ate up". The bronze-ish
gears are intact, but with sharper teeth than I’d like.
The water pump cam on the prop shaft (part of the ps gear)
      is wore down about 3/16".
There’s a chunk broke out of the gear cover.
Other than that, looks great 😕

It’s possible I could machine a new prop shaft.
The old one is 7/16". If I were to order a piece
of round stock, what grade am I looking for?
It would have to be something I could thread on
      the lathe.

Re: The water pump cam – If I could get the worn cam
"round" again, I could possibly install a bushing over
it to bring it back to size. I don’t have a four jaw
      chuck on the lathe though.
      Thoughts?

Re: gear case cover. It almost looks like some kind
of "pot metal" to me, so doubtful if it can be
      welded up…. pretty thin anyway.
If the thing ends up running "okay", I’d keep
my eye open for a replacement cover, but for now,
I was thinking of a way to patch it up to keep
minnows or leeches out of the gears 😮
I doubt if the gear case was very water proof
even when new anyway….. so, what might
      work best?
      JB Weld, 2 part epoxy?

Regarding the photo with the "Slots" – is there
suppose to be a washer or something that
goes in the slot between the two mating halves?

      Thanks for your ideas!

Looking at my parts list/illustration,I see nothing that would indicate a seal, bearing or washer would fit the groove in your photo. As far as the broken casting goes,I think a really good welder of aluminum could probably put a blob on the broken casting that you could grind to shape. You could also put a blob of JB Weld on there after putting a screw in the hole. That case does need to be pretty water tight(there is a gasket),but it’s grease filled so you have a little slack.

Stanley, thanks for looking at the parts list regarding the slot.
Regarding the prop shaft, I ordered this hardened bolt,
with the hopes I can make it into a prop shaft!

Prop shafts aren’t too hard to make unless there’s a keyway to cut in them. Unfortunately, I don’t have a mill or a lathe vice for doing this, yet! I’m not sure of the grade of stainless I use but it cuts and drills nice with sharp tools. You might have a problem working with a hardened bolt though, because it’s hard. The old shafts I’ve replaced are fairly soft and some of them weren’t even stainless and they had corroded and rusted away.

Can you build the lobe up with weld? Shimming one of your chucks jaws a bit will give you an offset to turn the lobes profile. Thickness of the shim will determine the amount of lift. After cleaning any oil off of the jaws surface, masking tape can be used to hold a shim in place.

I can’t remember which motor it was but I’ve seen that groove somewhere. It seems to me there was a plasticky type of washer/seal that went in it. I’ll search some photos to see if I can find it.

Mumbles, thanks for the interesting tip on "off-setting" an object
              in a three jaw vise!
The water pump lobe and gear are cast in one, so I’m not sure
if that oil soaked bronze lobe could be built up with braze
without destroying the gear? To tell the truth, I’ve brazed lots
of iron pieced over the years, but never brazed any bronze
pieces, so not sure what to expect.
I ordered a hardened bolt to try to make a prop shaft, as all
I have to do is drill three holes in it. No steps or keyways
              need machined.

My HA-15, LT-37, and LT-39 all have a fiber type washer that fit in the slot pointed out in picture #1.

Nabmd, thanks for that information! Will have to examine
mine closer tomorrow, and see just what that fiber washer
would do in the slot…… perhaps just keep exhaust
out of the pump area? I’m sure I can come up with
                    something to fit it.
