      Greetings.

I picked up a Mercury 9.8 motor today. From the best I can see on the plate the serial number is 5318585. When I looked up the number on one of the mercury sites it said not found.
does anyone know the year? A link to a schematic would be awesome.

She had spark. i suspect it is from 85.

      thanks

      Ralph

On Mercurys sometimes just having the serial number is enough. For getting parts etc. you really never get asked the year. That said; if your motor has the correct cowling and it’s not been painted over etc…then you may be able to pin down the year that way. These are from the bigger motors but the cowling color schemes generally carry on down the line.

The almighty serial number is what the dealer wants when buying parts but the style and design of the hood emblems can also help narrow down the year of manufacture.
