Wondering if someone could help me identify exact year and some specific info on a old motor that belonged to my grandfather I know it’s a Johnson 5hp but only come up with a window for the year which is 1946-49
MODEL IS TD 20 WITH SERIAL NO. 517327 (SEE PICTURES )
anyone could help with specifics on it and any service info as I would like to get it cleaned up and possibly functional depending on extent of repair

That would be a 1946 model.

Those early TD’s usually still have good coils, but you will want to check them with an Ohm Meter. Should have about 3.5 Kila Ohms in the secondary winding. Compression will need to be 70-75 Psi for it to idle and run well. You will also need new Leather primer seals and instructions to install them. If so, send $10.00 cash and a self addressed stamped envelope to: Lloyd Lautner, 9289 North Long Lake Road, Traverse City Michigan 49685

There is a serial number listing in The Old Outboard Handbook by Peter Hunn. A good book to have in this hobby.

                      Thanks Jim,
Check your compression & if not will not idle. Oh no somebody already said that! It’s a horse of a different color.
