I think you should just pack i all up and sell it to me……I dont have one of those LOL. Martins are my favorite motors.

Just goes to show how good my forgetter is working. I thought the neutral clutch was on the drive shaft, below the water pump. Not, huh? Sounds like you need to ask Russ Larson.

There is a Syncro-Twist which is different than a Twist Shift
which I have. Maybe that is the model your thinking of Frank.
I don’t know anything about either. I found a manual for the
Syncro-Twist on line. Does that look familiar. Its nothing like I have.

Synchro Twist is a twist-grip throttle,no shift. At least that is what I think I remember.

Tubs, I have these pages for the Martin 100 lower unit that
has a neutral shift. Perhaps it’s similar to the TS 75 Martin?
I wished I had the actual motor!
I do have the TS and ST 75 Martins. I was never able to find the
                manual for the TS 75.
My TS works nice, and I’ve never opened up the LU yet,
as nothing leaked when I got it, so I have no idea what’s in the gear case.

                  Thanks Buc.
I was thinking the drive shaft was a single
piece in my mind but I guess its not. Looks
like the shaft disengages under this plate. I
took the 4 screws out but it didn’t want to
separate easily. I thought it would be wise
to ask a few questions first. I’m not sure
about that remaining screw. Is it holding
something together under the cover or
dose it need to come out to remove it.
I’m going wait to see what other responses
I get. Would hurt to have some guidance
in getting it apart. I don’t see the lever that
disengages the shaft (if that is what happens)
on mine but the clutch pack and assembly
on the prop shaft looks the same.
                  This ring a bell Frank?

AHA! As I thought, #43 is the clutch spring. Works similar to TN Johnsons. I got you this far, that’s about all I remember.

Sounds like your on the right track now Tubs.
Not sure what’s holding it from coming apart.
                      Perhaps just gasket cement?
Perhaps the clutch spring needs to be "unwound" off the drum
by holding the prop shaft and spinning the driveshaft backwords?
Then there’s always the bolt holding the pinion gear on the end
of the driveshaft….. probably not that, but just a thought.

I was just putting together a Gale 5D10 lower unit off an Atlas today.
Not sure how similar the Martin may be.

Hope to hear and see more on your progress in case I ever tear my
                      TS 75 apart!

Is it possible that the adjustment was incorrect where the cable goes into the tube to the lower unit? Maybe that bent rod just didn’t get pulled up far enough to put the motor in neutral. Now that you have the lower unit off, try raising the rod as far as you can and see if you get the neutral. Keep in mind that there may be enough friction to make it seem the motor is NOT in neutral, you’ll have to put some resistance to keep the prop from turning.

                        Tom
