      Good afternoon,
We’ve restored a 1955 Aristocraft Torpedo 14 ft runabout and are trying to get the cable/pulley system properly set-up. It would seem to be straightforward, except that there are enclosed pulley’s (or guides) that are part of the boat design.
Under the dash, there are pulleys that are in each corner. The wire goes through a hole in the pulley bracket and on the wood of the dash. It runs along the side through a hole between the two cockpits. Along the side again and through a hole exiting the boat through a tear drop shaped guide, a top mount pulley, through the mount on the motor and back underneath to the spring inside the boat.
As much as we try, we cannot get it tight enough not to loosen off of the steering wheel mount.
Do we need more pulleys? If so, where should we mount them in relation to the spring?
      Thanks so much!

Hopefully you’ve called Dave, but in case you haven’t I’ve noticed a couple of things. 1. You have too many turns on each drum of the steering wheel, and with all that excess cable, things are bound to get out of whack. Usually 2 full turns per drum side will allow the motor to turn completely as needed. 2. I didn’t see any tension springs unless they are there and under the deck. Those springs help keep tension on the steering cable and absorb the shaking that occurs when the engine is idling.

Auuuu! come on Dave we wanna know what you have to say about this steering problem too. Please share with the rest of us we want learned from your vast knowledge.
Number one Mercury man! I once replaced one of these steering cables. Dang if I didn’t have the wheel turning one way and the boat going the other way! Man that was exciting!
