I just picked up an RD 19 for really cheap. Problem is it has no electric start. I guess men were men in 1957, but in 2015 roping this thing over is a PITA! I have a line on a FD 20 with electric start on it. Will the bracket and starter from the FD bolt up to the RD?

Nope. Two different animals. The FD starter mounts on the port side while the RD starter mounts on the starboard side.

Keep your eye open at flea markets for one of these chain drive starters for your RD. I think they were aftermarket so there has to be one out there somewhere!

Where there is a will, there’s a way. And someone trying to get hurt.

How does it disengage after starting?

                  Looks like it doesn’t.
I think that if they rigged it right, that might become a generator that would keep the battery charged…

No – It has a one way sprocket above the flywheel. It free wheels while the motor is running. The down side, if the battery goes dead, you have to take everything off to get a rope around the flywheel. . . . 🙄

That is cool! Great question on how it disengages, was wondering the same.

                      Here are two more questions…..

Did it fit under the cover?
Would it be/is it loud with the chain spinning/flopping around?

the early RD models are pretty loud regardless.
