This one has the 5 bolt lower. I wonder what else could be wrong with it?November 25, 2016 at 6:28 am #47996You have to expect a worse case scenario with any old motor. The splines on the crank and driveshaft can rust and wear and replacing the ignition system, coils, points etc., water pump, carb kit and resealing the gearcase can be expected as basic to do chores unless the seller can show it running and has receipts for recent maintenance work. These motors are getting old and not all of them get the care they need.
November 25, 2016 at 12:08 pm #47999It has been run hot. At least he did replace the head gasket and exhaust cover gaskets after it happened. Anybody’s guess as to how much other heat damage happened.
November 25, 2016 at 12:21 pm #48001well it turned all black so must be pretty bad 😆
I worry about any repaint from a guy who can’t event try to do some.. paint
matching 🙁anything above $75-100 is to much for me for an oldy

November 25, 2016 at 2:00 pm #48002How can you tell it’s been run hot?
November 25, 2016 at 2:44 pm #48003November 25, 2016 at 5:42 pm #48007Well, it is certainly worth a look if not far away…Yeah, it’s been run hot, but these engines are pretty rugged and tolerate a lot of abuse. To me, it kind of looks like the head gasket was replaced, so that is good. Seller reports the compression to be OK, but you would have to confirm this…You will want to inspect the gear lube as well.
But, the seller wants way too much money, so don’t bother unless he is willing to negotiate. Too bad about the black paint as well.November 25, 2016 at 6:15 pm #48009In my opinion, it’s worth $85 tops, at a local aomci meet here in FL. But then I’m a cheap bugger.
November 25, 2016 at 9:24 pm #48021Right there with ya’ on the "cheap bugger". That’s one reason (of many) I like this group. You all get your $$$’s worth, and then some. Sorta’ like takin your Dad and his car freak friend when you buy your first car. It’s just the smart thing to do.
November 27, 2016 at 4:43 pm #48080I’m getting cheaper with age as well….Someone killed this engine’s possible value just by painting it black, worth much more in its original paint. Don’t get me wrong, if this engine was in nice cosmetic and mechanical shape, I would be willing to pay this price and perhaps more. I love the 55 Johnson color and graphics. I would call the seller to see if his price is negotiable, if so, I would go look at it. I agree, that engine looks more like a $100 old used outboard to me. On the plus side, the engine likes to be whole, and hasn’t been badly molested.
Negotiations will be tricky, the seller is likely to be offended if you just spring the $100 offer in him. Give him some time to see if his ebay offer pans out, then gently explain all the various service operations that will be needed to make this a reliable daily runner…Finding a decent fuel tank will cost money as well…
PS-Don’t forget to point out the engine has been badly overheated at some point, and there may be hidden piston/cylinder damage/wear. -
