Okies…here ya go, this makes it what I think is really easy…goto:

    http://www.marineengine.com

Look to the bottom left of the page for the Sierra marine Button..Click it, you will then see this: Use the instructions to go directly to the applications page for carbs and or lower unit seal kits… You could go as far as to bookmark each under carb or l/u seal kits to find it even easier. Here is the photo of what you should see to goto page listing:

The sierra kit like others have said does not come with the new float. One other issue I’ve had with the 18-7043 kit is the packing washers. They are a little big and leak like crazy for a week or two. After that they seem to swell up from fuel soaking into them and are OK. This could be normal I guess, I’ll let FrankR or Mumbles comment on that but it makes it hard to dial in the carb at first because the same fuel leak is also a vacuum leak when running.

So get the OEM that does have the float 439071….

Which leads me to wonder, do y’all change the float every rebuild?

No, I only change the float if the motor is 50 to 60 years old and is still sporting the original. Would that not be proper? I’m just asking. You have most likely rebuilt hundreds more carbs then I have.

Actually no, I use what is there.. have found a couple that were in dire need of replacement.. most still floated properly so i put them back in service…

I do work on them, just not as a side job, lets say I am picky what I work on…I already have enough irons in the fire….most just plain were plugged up and no fuel passed…after a serious cleaning, there were good to go.. and hundreds more??? LOL nope 🙂

So your thoughts on the packing washers Richard? Is leaking at first normal?

I can send you a ’74 Johnson Parts Reference Guide PDF but I’ll need your email addy again. I couldn’t find carb kits listed in it but my ’80 Reference Guide does. I can always scan the page out of it and send it to.

My dealer supplies gearcase seal kits for the 9.9 – 15 horse motors but I’m not sure about any others.

    Email sent.

And has anyone found a cheap source for them? I know it’s been mentioned before, but I don’t think so on this forum.

Honestly I buy them 50 at a time, the packing gland washers, and dig out the old and replace with new on every one I work on…and I cant ever remember even looking for a leak there, guess I just never thought it would leak with new ones in place. At first I would just add one or two to ensure a snug needle. I really am a rookie at this, I do make mistakes, and I can learn. Still thinking about the Kerosene idea. It would ensure a good seal from the get go, if it was inclined to leak… oh heck, I am tired and need a shower, good night guys…LOL
