I have a Mercury 4 hp single cylinder that has no spark.  I filed the points, soldered on new wires as the insulation was cracked.   I had spark initially and then nothing.

I  did some checking and followed a how to video and have determined the coil is dead by checking with an ohm meter.

However, I don’t wish to invest money in a coil without knowing if the stator is also dead.  The coil is expensive enough.   But the cost of the stator far exceeds the value of this motor.

Is there a simple way to test it?

        some info…

Search Results for ‘phase-maker’ – Antique Outboard Motor Club,Inc (aomci.org)

Thank you for the article.  It’s informative but well above my jedi powers of understanding.   What I was hoping for was a little more like put tab “A”into slot “B”.  In other words,  a simpler explanation  how to test it.  Like:  hook black/white wire to ohmeter and ground to “x” and it should read “x – x”.   I dabble and can fix things but I’m not a schooled tech.  Electrical problems confound me and humble my ego quickly.   Unfortunately youtube doesnt have this how to for me.

I would retest the coil because  it may be testing open   due to a bad /oxydized crimp in the boot itself versus the coils internal windings

the white insulator for the points usually goes bad.

CDI furnishes a brief troubleshooting procedure.  I have attached their PDF below.   And;  as Dave mentions….the white insulator blocks that allow the point wiring to exit the stator housing  can also be the problem.  Look for the slightest hairline cracks that can provide a path to ground.
