I recently got a (sort of) running 5.5 Johnson that I intend to go though. It runs rough and dies on throttle application. Unfortunately the stern bracket is missing the data plate. I know that it isn’t a 1955 as it has the wing screws on the front cowling half, but how do I tell if it is a 53 or a 54 or? What are the differences, if any in a CD-10 and a CD-11? It is painted with the Sea Horse Green color, and looks like a junior version of my 1954 QD-15 10 hp. Is there anything outstanding that I can use to identify my motor other than the data plate – or does it really matter? TIA.

        It isn’t a 1953 because those were TN-xx.
        CD-10 & CD-11 were both 1954.
Look for the round “freeze” plug on the block for a model/serial number.

The 1954-1955 CD’s can be tricky to identify. It seems that some of the early 1955 CD-12 models did have the cowl wing screws. 1954 models often didn’t have the ID welch plug on the blocks. 1954 CD-10 and CD-11 models should have dull aluminum paint on the cowl in addition to the seahorse green. CD-12 has cream color in addition to the seahorse green.

The earlier CD-10 was not set up for remote control, and the later CD-11 was. The CD-10 has a different shifter without a cable slot, and no key or gussets in the carry handle.

Here’s a pic of my ’54 CD-11 with original paint colors.

My ’54 CD-10 does not have a serial # on the welch plug. I’ll go with silver trim in ’54 and cream trim in ’55
At the meet Saturday in Lake Placid, FL there was a CD with 5 HP decals not 5 1/2 HP. It looked original.

Here’s a picture of one of the early 1955 CD-12 motors with the cowl wing screws. I’d guess that these cowls were left over from the 1954 CD-10 or CD-11 series.
