I replaced my impeller out from of a sealed bag with the correct part number. Same Diameter and Height. I understand the flow is increased and the Pressure is reduced.
Help, Does It Matter?? New to me engine, I don’t want to cook it! As I understand it these Big twins don’t have thermostats.
I was also told “internet search” rotate the shaft clockwise as inserting the housing. I sure hope that is correct!
Thanks All for reading,
Chris
March 30, 2025 at 12:05 pm #294995if you use the drive shaft and cover to PUSH DOWN on the impeller yes clockwise if fine.. if you manually insert the impeller in the upper half cover of the pump you pre-install COUNTER CLOCKWISE and when you flip it to install it will turn in the proper direction.. clockwise 🙂
add a touch of oil or grease in the housing to help it slide
btw.. post your mdl | & serial#

Again thank you, Model 28402M Serial E 03810 Upgraded to electric start by me, (missing lower leg and carburetor) Short Shaft missing but changed to other short shaft by me, Carburetor missing replaced with electric choke carburetor from 1957 30 HP
March 30, 2025 at 4:46 pm #295009I did use a touch of grease when installing the impeller.
The impeller in the pump was 6 blades and the one I installed has 5 blades/legs so more flow and less pressure (as I understand this). If anyone thinks this is a problem please say. I’ll be using my infrared thermometer and I’ll be looking for 120 – 140°f
Again thank you everyone for reading and extra thanks for responding.

Chris five or six either will work. When you start up the old girl make sure the water is up to the bulge where the impeller is. It will pump like crazy or not pump at all. No pumpie something is wrong. You will have to do it over. It is easy to loose the drive pin or miss align the water tube when you assemble the pump housing.

Are you sure this impeller is an OEM piece and not some aftermarket thing with the OMC part number on it? I have never heard of 5 blade impellers replacing six blade impellers on OMC outboards. I would be suspect, this is one area you don’t want to fool around with, be sure the impeller is OEM. Overheat it at high RPMs, definite damage occurs…
Looks like the original OMC part number was: 378891 which supercedes to: 775521
