June 8, 2017 at 9:36 am #7277Hello everyone, I have a 40 hp Gale Sovereign outboard with all the controls that’s been sitting in my garage for about 20 years and I’m looking to get rid of it. It’s dirty but in fairly good shape. I wish I could supply a model number but it’s leaning against that side and is too heavy for me to move. I was curious how much it might be worth, and where I’d have success reaching a market for it. Thank you in advance. Can you tell if it’s seized from sitting? Not a particularly valuable motor in my area, but it would be a good reliable motor for someone. June 8, 2017 at 2:41 pm #59268D’oh! Guess I didn’t look as well as I thought. My excuse is it was dark and I don’t have the best eyesight. The model # is 40DE14B and serial # 810962. Also I am located in southwest Florida. I have no idea if its seized, is there anything I can do to tell that? Like I said I can’t even move it by myself but I may be able to get some strong boys to help me :D. June 8, 2017 at 4:48 pm #59275yep, 40DE14B is a 1961. June 8, 2017 at 6:32 pm #59279Take the cover off and see if the flywheel will turn. That’s pretty easy. If it isn’t stuck, if it has compression, if the gearcase contains oil and little if any water, it could be a user motor. Do the clam screws turn? June 8, 2017 at 6:46 pm #59280I just spent half an hour composing a message and when I hit the [ENTER] button, my post was erased and I was informed I needed a user name and password in order to post to this board – – – 👿 June 8, 2017 at 11:27 pm #59295 June 8, 2017 at 11:27 pm #59295Oh no! I do hope to hear what you had to say when you are feeling up for it. As far as checking the motor I am not exactly mechanically inclined, for instance what is a clam screw? Is it possible anyone could give me an estimate on what it’s worth seized versus unseized? June 8, 2017 at 11:56 pm #59299Sorry, I meant clamp screws. What fastens the motor to the boat. Sometimes they are an indication of the overall level of corrosion, and this is something to be wary of in your location.
