A water separator/primer pump came with the OMC built in fuel tank package. You traded your 6 gallon factory fuel tank for it. It was the same price of an extra 6 gal. tank. . . 😉

My 1996 MerCruiser Inboard/Outboard Glastron ski boat has an inline water-separator/filter. It looks like a medium size spin-on automotive oil filter. When it was new, I changed the filter after one year’s use and I dumped the old filter into a clear glass jar to see what was in it – it was about 1/4 water, so it did it’s job! I’ve changed it a couple times since and found no water in it. When I got it new, it was 3 years old and never was licensed or put in the water due to a dealer bankruptcy that took years to settle. I’m thinking a nearly empty vented tank may have got a lot of humidity sucked in and out with seasonal changes those 3 years of non-use – hence the water.
Here is what my boat uhas:

or add an aftermarket one like this:

I remember a friend having a gasoline funnel back around 1960 that had a piece of what looked like felt that the gas strained through. Any water drops in the gas were caught by the felt, and it worked very well. I’m thinking the water-separator devices do something similar.

When I first read this post I was reminded of something I saw on a Caterpillar
Tractor fuel tank cover. It was embossed "Buy clean fuel, keep
          It clean."

I use the same style funnel that outbdnut2 talks about. Every time I gas up a motor or a remote tank. Every time.

I think the spin-on water separator is a good idea. The limitation is that you can’t see how much if any water is in them. The type with a visible sump is preferable.
